Biography

Media Preferences: Watercolours

I am a retired art teacher, living in Mitchell, Ontario where I paint and instruct from my home studio. I was born in Stratford, Ontario and educated at York University (BFA), Western (BEd) and Queen’s (Art Specialist Qualifications).

As an avid outdoors-man, I have hiked and paddled my canoe or kayak wherever there is a trail or water. Killarney and Algonquin parks have been my favourites and it is there that I have created many of my paintings.

Throughout my teaching career I participated in a number of shows including one man and group exhibits in Stratford, Grand Bend, Exeter, St.Mary’s, Mitchell  and Toronto. Following my years of teaching I began working full time on my own art. I am an active member of the Art in the Park Association of Stratford, exhibiting my work and serving on the executive. As well, I am an exhibiting member of the Goderich Coop Gallery.

Although I now almost exclusively work in watercolour, I have created works in many other media including oils, oil sticks, pastels and egg tempera. Current watercolour pieces have been created on a variety of papers, canvas and birch panels.  A typical piece is painted in my studio using photos taken from travels. However, I have also created paintings on-site. These pieces may stand on their own as a single session work or be used later as a sketch to create a larger more finished piece in my studio.

I have continued to teach individuals and groups from my home studio, through the Mitchell Public Library and this summer at Killareney and MacGregor Provincial Parks. Topics range from studio techniques to painting in the field and I am able to accommodate most people’s needs.
